Toxicity in different sectors is thought to be a fact confined to a person’s offensive expression, supported by anonymity, usually performed online. However, it is known that this type of situation can go further and present a real danger to people’s safety. In this sense, the terrible events that followed England’s defeat at Euro 2021 prompted the director of a video game company to talk about it and assess its experience.

Racism emerged after the Euro 2021 final against English players

As you know, last weekend the Euro 2021 final was held between England and Italy. The match was decided by penalties and in the case of England, Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bucayo Zaca, the three black players, failed. The defeat drove the extreme fans crazy who quickly attacked the three footballers with racist expressions and even vandalized a mural made in honor of Rashford for his crusade against child hunger. This fact did not go unnoticed, and a petition was submitted to the Government of England to implement a regulation so that users of social networks identify themselves with credentials or an official document when opening an account. Well, one of those who endorsed this idea was Cory Andres, Community Manager at 2K Games.

2K Games director recounted his experience facing player threats

In the context of racist acts against footballers in England, Cory Andres took the opportunity to share his experience with toxicity through his Twitter account. The 2K Games director, who in the past has also worked at EA, has revealed that there have been times when some members of the community have been so toxic that they have gone from hostile and hurtful comments online to sending pictures where they are warned that someone in your city is damaging your car and license plate or Caught her in the parking lot of the shopping center.

According to Andres, the threats and hostile attitude of some players were such that he not only sought treatment, but the companies in which he worked offered him escorts to look after him during his travels and while he was at home.

Unfortunately, toxicity remains an underlying problem in video games and others, and violence often goes from words to deeds. Case in point, the case of a man who was killed by a smash hit that arose after a dispute in an online game and the last move a player had to make in the face of the authorities’ constant incursions into his home due to inconvenience to players.
