The launch of the NES Classic Edition and SNES Classic Edition was a success for Nintendo, with old consoles selling millions of units and even matching the Wii U’s sales level.

For this reason, the players expected the company to continue this line of releases, which did not happen. Many dreamed of the premiere of the Nintendo 64 Classic Edition and there were even hints about its debut in 2017.

Unfortunately, the project never came to fruition, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that Nintendo will abandon the mini consoles. In fact, Shuntaro Furukawa, the company’s president, stated that there are possibilities for the production line to continue in the future.

Nintendo isn’t ruling out releasing more classic consoles

During a shareholder meeting this week, Nintendo talked about its plans to introduce its franchises to more people. An attendee talked about the Nintendo Classic series and how useful it was for seniors who quit playing to connect with the company’s series.

Apparently, Furukawa didn’t quite dislike the idea, saying that they were constantly looking for their privileges to reach out to both children and adults. The director knows that Nintendo sagas are known by people of all ages who have at some point enjoyed one of their consoles.

With this in mind, Furukawa mentioned that the retro console series is an alternative to bring his games from the past and his most successful franchises to a larger audience. This initiative will be reinforced with releases on Nintendo Switch Online.

“We will continue to study the possibility of providing classic content, such as the NES Series and Super NES Classic Mini, as well as our online services, as a way to communicate the appeal of our products to different generations,” Furukawa said.

Fans of the company and its games also dream of seeing other mini consoles on the market. A fan stepped on to Nintendo and created the GameCube Classic Edition. On the other hand, a record years ago suggested the possible premiere of the Game Boy Classic Edition.
