Nintendo has had a bittersweet relationship with esports over the years, but it still struggles to earn a place between the scene and the taste of gamers who love to compete.

The company will strengthen its competitive offering this year thanks to its alliance with PlayVS, which will organize various gaming tournaments in high schools and universities in the United States. At the same time, Nintendo has come under heavy criticism for not supporting cash prizes in esports.

Shuntaro Furukawa, the company’s president, recently spoke about the importance of competitive events to his business. The manager explained why they are interested in increasing their presence in esports.

Why is esports important to Nintendo?

During a meeting with investors, Furukawa touched on the topic of esports and his plans to expand his presence in this segment of the industry. The manager emphasized that competitive events are very important to the company and its privileges.

Reason? From Furukawa’s perspective, esports serves Nintendo to share the gaming experience it offers to a larger audience. At the same time they generate interest in their most famous franchises and characters.

“We believe formats like esports, where players compete against each other in front of many people, are a way to share the gaming experience with a wider audience,” the Nintendo president said.

Furukawa believes that the company’s recent tournaments have been well received by both the community and all viewers who have enjoyed the events online, who are not necessarily familiar with their products and series.

“Tournaments can motivate people who own the game to keep playing and can spark interest in Nintendo titles and characters from people who don’t own the game,” Furukawa said.

Finally, the manager confirmed that they will continue to work on the competencies of their major titles. So players can look forward to more Nintendo tournaments in the future, especially when the pandemic situation improves.
