The WitcherCon was full of ads and surprises for fans of Geralt of Rivia and his partners. One of the panels revealed important information about the development of the game franchise and how CD Projekt RED was able to adapt writer Andrzej Sapkowski’s saga.
The developer admitted something that shocked some fans of the saga, because the first game could have been different from the one we all know. Reason? Geralt de Rivia will not be the protagonist in the title.
CD Projekt RED talked a bit about the game’s development process and explained why Geralt de Rivia was left out the magician.

CD Projekt RED was originally set up to recreate the scene, world, and characters from the Sapkowski saga to deliver an ambitious game for players. Geralt de Rivia plays a key role in the saga, but for some reason the studio wanted to keep him away from the first game.
Reason? CD Projekt RED wanted to give players the opportunity to create their own warlock using a system similar to other games of the time. For this reason, the character of Geralt de Rivia as the protagonist will not exist, because each player will have his own.
“For the first few years we basically tried to do this so you could create your own wizard (…) but time and time again, the question came up, you know. The game is called the magician. At some point, I think everyone realized, yeah, we want to be Geralt Rivia, we want to be The Designer Philip Weber said:
Fortunately, CD Projekt RED changed its mind and gave the already well-known character the lead role. This was definitely a great choice, as Geralt of Rivia is now known to all players and is an industry icon all over the world.
