The debate over the way those responsible for operating systems operate on their ecosystems continues to grow. Now because of Google’s new anti-competitive means that could severely impact what Microsoft does with Windows 11 and Xbox Game Pass on mobile.

What happens is that, as I mentioned the edgeRecently, a new lawsuit was filed against Google for anti-competitive and monopolistic practices. As part of the legal process, some of the agreements the company has with companies that release apps on Google Play have been released, as well as deals it has made with those in charge of smartphones.

One of the highlights is that it has been revealed that Google is planning to terminate APK files to install the app. This is a measure that will severely impact competitors such as Samsung Galaxy Store, Huawei’s AppGallery and Amazon’s App Store (with everything and its integration with Windows 11). This is by narrowing down the scope of your content and complicating the presentation of your application’s organization.

Exactly how does it affect them? Currently, developers can offer their apps in APK format, which makes them compatible with all devices that support this type of app. Google wants to abandon the APK format to adopt AAB, which has some advantages, but the problem is that the Play Store is the only one that supports it.

Thus, developers who want to access the Play Store and compete will have to bundle their apps in two different types of formats. That is: extra work to get access to more stores.

Actions can affect Xbox Game Pass on Android

Another important point is that with Google you will implement a new system of Google subscription services. As on iOS, providers will lack the opportunity to inform their customers that they can sign up directly on the web. This is to prevent them from skipping the 30% commission for Google.

This is a metric that can affect services like Microsoft like Xbox Game Pass Ultimate or OneDirve and also content streaming services like Netflix or Spotify. We say this because they will have an important decision to make: either they agree to give 30% commission to Google or they simply can’t be offered through the Play Store.

Remember that Microsoft already has an issue with Apple for this kind of action. What happened is that Apple asked for a 30% commission and also asked to treat each xCloud game as an individual entity and not as part of the service. The result is that Game Pass as an iOS app was useless, so Microsoft developed a better browser app.

Depending on how the case goes, Microsoft may have to make a similar decision on Android. Of course, in this ecosystem, you will be free to distribute your Game Pass app through a store other than the Play Store.

And you, what do you think of this situation? Do you think Google should change its procedures to offer a more supportive platform for companies that release content? Tell us in the comments.
